Self-sufficient, stable and flexible at any location
koelnmesse’s new cash register system had to masterfully handle the demands of a frequently visited trade show business. The customer valued high flexibility, but also stability, in being able to efficiently respond to network failures. The new cash register also had to be able to manage koelnmesse’s customer card program.
Sodexo Services GmbH has been responsible for the operation of two full-service and 33 check-out counter restaurants and from stand catering to conference and banquet catering at koelnmesse since 2011. For larger trade shows, around 40 outlets like café bars and snack points are also added to its area of responsibility.
When a new cash register system was needed, the choice was made for the modularly designed Matrix POS cash register solution. For this purpose, a total of 90 cash registers were installed in the restaurant areas of koelnmesse by the experts at 42 GmbH. Every cash register can function as a standalone unit and can thus be used completely separately from the respective network. They can be quickly repositioned or exchanged if needed. koelnmesse’s “Catering Credit Card” for cashless payment by visitors can also easily be read by the cash registers, which feature magnetic card readers. Data is collected in the underlying customer database and can then be analyzed after the trade show and forwarded to the bookkeeping department for accounting purposes. Regularly “shopping” customers receive discounts which the system recognizes and deducts using the card.
With around 80 international trade fairs and almost 300,000 m² of exhibition space, koelnmesse ranks as the fifth-largest trade show grounds in the world. Professional chefs and hotel traders especially value the Matrix POS when it comes to peak times. It’s not unheard of for an entire wine list to have to be changed right before a large event. “In terms of the work that needs to be done, it’s not that difficult,” said Richter, “but it has to be possible to reconfigure the data quickly and reliably. Matrix provides ideal support here.”
